i’m doing it again — signing up for another city to city project. i feel delighted, and also there’s a twinge of guilt. i’ve accepted that i’ll wait until the last minute to work on my book. the shame.

but good things happen from this!

old sketchbooks inspire me. a couple of our past themes will be in animation pre-production this year! like caterpillars, they become butterflies.

so i’m signing up for the 2013 sketchbook project before midnight. i want that little free sleeping bag.

I happily start the music, light the candles + drink so much coffee that I’m unaware the house is on fire… then draw!

For my Sketchbook Project, I tried out certain lyrics, which wonderfully, are always stuck in my head. The brilliant artists are these guys: {Telekinesis, Beirut, Foster the People, The Muppet Show Theme Song, Okkervil River, Bishop Allen, Deer Tick} + some things I think too.

Discover how the coffee disguises itself as part of the artwork.

I’ve decided to take on The Sketchbook Project.

The bad news is I’ve been having bad dreams every night for about a month now. The good news is I have material for my book.

Sketch Nights

Hello again,

I was a freshman at Pratt when my life drawing professor took me aside the last day of class to evaluate my work.

“I really like your style Noelle, but you’ve given the models a bit of a cartoon-y look.  It’s not very realistic.”

“Thank you!”  said young Noelle, deciding then and there to switch her major to Animation.

I love life drawing and really admire people who can get a perfect likeness of the models within a few minutes.  I can try and try, but I will never be that good.  And I do have fun exaggerating features, loosening up, enjoying the jazz and the drinks at the Society on Tuesdays and Thursday Nights.

Here are a few sketches from the last one.

The Sketchbook Project

It’s about time art geeks got their own concert … er, sketchbook tour!

Screen shot 2010 07 04 at 3.10.21 PM The Sketchbook Project

Art House has a new project for you.  Anyone can participate in the 2011 Sketchbook Project Tour – all you do is sign up by Halloween to have them send you a sketchbook.  They give you themes to choose from, my favorite being, “this is not a sketchbook” – I think that leaves it pretty open. Do some drawings until January 15th, 2011 when you send that rockstar off to go on tour in March with the rest of the sketchbooks.  After the tour, they’ll be in a permanent collection at the Brooklyn Art Library.  More info.

I feel a bit torn.  I love my sketchbooks so it would break my tiny black heart to let one leave the nest.  But if you love something set it free, and when it never comes back you can always go to the library to visit it.

I’m in!  Who’s with me?

~Noelle

PS  - there is a discount for group orders of sketchbooks.  I’m not sure what the minimum is but if anyone wants to do a group order let me know.

Was another sketchbook essential for me to have?

No.  I have countless half filled books of all sizes.  But nevertheless I’m startling a new one and this is the first drawing for your entertainment.  I’m glad I like it, since it’s the first page.  I’m striving to draw more and so I take this pocket-sized book with me when I travel.

Out of all my drink and drawings from Thursday’s Sketch Night, only these made it to the top 3.  They’re so much more fun to draw when they’re tubby.  But I don’t mind drawing hot ones either. The more I drank the sexier she became…
